Schengen Era for Bulgaria and Romania

From 31 March 2024, citizens of Bulgaria and Romania will enter a new era of freedom of movement, thanks to the decision of the Council of the European Union to admit these countries to the Schengen Agreement. This historic moment marks the end of a long wait and efforts aimed at establishing closer ties between Bulgaria, Romania and other EU countries.

1. New Opportunities for Short Term National Visas

According to the decision, short-term national visas (type C, etc.) issued by Bulgaria and Romania before or after March 31, 2024 are now recognized for entry for the purpose of transit or stay of up to 90 days in a six-month period in all Schengen countries. This will facilitate the movement of citizens and promote tourism and business connections between countries.

2. Recognition of Permits for Long and Permanent Stay

Long-term and permanent residence permits (residence permit/permanent residence permit/permanent residence permit) issued by Bulgaria and Romania will be recognized in all Schengen countries. This will provide convenience for citizens entitled to long-term stay and create favorable conditions for the development of economic and cultural ties.

3. Limitless Travel by Air and Sea

From 31 March 2024, travel by air and sea to Schengen countries will be free of border controls, similar to domestic flights. At the moment, simplified border controls on land within the Schengen area are maintained. This will allow citizens of Bulgaria and Romania to travel easily and freely without encountering unnecessary administrative barriers.
